Longview Overview

River views, pine trees, and mountain views. These are the images that come to mind when you think of Longview, Washington. Located along the north banks of the Columbia River, Longview is a small town in Cowlitz County, just 50 minutes north of Portland, Oregon. With a population of just under 38,000 residents, Longview is a fantastic small town with a charming downtown area, tons of bridges, and some of the most beautiful nature parks in Southern Washington. Longview is small-town living at its finest!

What is the history of Longview?

Originally settled by the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, which is still headquartered in Cowlitz County, the town of Longview was built in the early 20th century as a logging town. The Long-Bell Lumber Company, led by Robert A. Long, wanted to purchase Cowlitz County's timberland in 1918, which resulted in the migration of 14,00 lumber and mill workers to the town. Long established the town of Longview in 1921, and it retains much of its small town charm today.

How is the weather in Longview?

While Longview is in the Pacific Northwest, the Columbia River heavily influences Longview's climate. Similar to nearby Portland, Longview has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate with four distinct seasons. Longview's warmest months are during the summer (May to September), with temperatures ranging anywhere from 48 degrees F to 78 degrees F, with records reaching a scorching 100 degrees F. The coldest months are during the winter (December to February), where temperatures average between 33 and 50 degrees F, with temperatures dipping below zero. Longview averages around 140 days of sunshine, with up to 56 inches of rain per year.
