Montclair Overview

Montclair New Jersey is a beautiful town to look for an apartment as an alternative to Brooklyn or other outer boroughs of NYC. Not only is it close to NYC, if you work there or like to enjoy the city, but the train system also allows you to get there with ease. What is the history of Montclair?

Montclair New Jersey prides itself on the train system, so it should come as no surprise that the township started with a disagreement over railroads. Originally part of Bloomfield, the residents of Montclair wanted to extend the railroad to the town, but Bloomfield did not approve the change. In 1868, the residents were successful in getting the state to approve a separate township. By 1873 the town had five train stations. The decision to bring in these railroads is a significant factor in why Montclair is such a vibrant community today. 

How is the weather in Montclair?

Like most of the Northeast, Montclair enjoys seasonal weather patterns. You can expect warmer temperatures above 75 degrees from May through September. The colder months are December through March, when temps are below 47 degrees. In the winter months, residents will enjoy a few snowstorms. 

How do I get around town?

When it comes to living and commuting in Montclair, there are many options. Montclair has six train stations, and the trains are very convenient to get to New York City, Hoboken and Newark International Airport. While trains are one of the best options to get in and out of Montclair, the town itself is very walkable. There are three downtown areas that you can walk to, with the longest stretch being Bloomfield Avenue. Montclair has an excellent bus system that is also a great resource to get around town. If you live in Montclair, with the vast transportation system and the ability to walk to the town center from many apartment buildings, you can certainly live there without having a car. 

What is the Montclair commute like?

If you are commuting in a car, the main roads you will use to get to NYC are the Garden State Parkway or NJ-3 E. The typical commute will be about 50 minutes. As with any busy city, traffic typically increases during the rush hour period. 

What are the local media outlets?

Residents of Montclair enjoy WMSC as one of their favorite radio stations. WMSC is run by the students of The University of Montclair and offers a wide variety of programming. For local news and local events, many residents turn to the website the Patch.

Many people refer to Montclair New Jersey as the urban oasis for New Yorkers. Montclair is close enough to the city that you can still enjoy everything it has to offer regularly. However, Montclair has so much to offer to residences as well. Montclair residents can enjoy the wide variety of restaurants, coffee shops, parks, and cultural events the town has to offer. 

What Montclair landmarks should I see?

Montclair is home to New Jersey's second-largest public university. Montclair State University is home to 21,115  students and is one contributing factor to the young vibe of the area. There are also plenty of historical sites to visit in Montclair. The Van Vleck House & Gardens is a beautiful estate with extraordinary gardens that are open to the public all year round. 

What is there to do around Montclair?

Montclair has something to offer to apartment residents, no matter what ones' tastes are. If you are into concerts, the Wellmont theater attracts a wide array of talent. If you are into food, there is no shortage of restaurants to enjoy in Montclair. Montclair is well known for its wine bars, farm to table restaurants, French brasseries, and Ethiopian restaurants. For nature lovers, there are beautiful parks to enjoy in Montclair. 

Any annual festivals or Montclair events to know?

The Montclair Jazz festival is a wonderful event that residents can enjoy each Summer. For a week, some of the best jazz performers come and entertain Montclair residents.  Another great annual festival is the Montclair Film festival. Now in its 6th year, the festival is a showcase for some wonderful independent films, documentaries and a wide array of family events to participate in throughout the ten days of the festival. In addition to the film and jazz festival, residents can also enjoy the literacy festival and the food and wine festival. 

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Montclair New Jersey is close to the beautiful beaches of the New Jersey Shore. Avalon is just a few hour drive from Montclair. It is a classic beach town that has plenty of restaurants and activities to enjoy on your summer vacation. If you are looking for more of a short weekend getaway, Philadelphia is a wonderful destination from Montclair. You can get there by train or car and enjoy the food scene, museum and historical sites Philadelphia has to offer. 

Where is the best place to move in Montclair?

If you are looking for an apartment in Montclair, there are some wonderful areas to consider. If you want to be by a train station but still want to be able to walk to the vibrant Bloomfield Ave, you should consider an apartment close to the Walnut or Bay Street train stations. If you are looking to be close to the University, then Upper Montclair Village is an excellent spot to look for an apartment. If you would like to live close to the wide variety of restaurants Montclair has to offer, then you should focus your apartment search on Montclair Town Center.
