Later, it was part of a Spanish land grant, and after California became a state, the Sproul brothers from Oregon purchased the land and arranged for the railroad to come through. For years it was a center for lumbering, orchards, farms and dairies. Later in the 20th century houses sprang up amidst the fruit trees and Norwalk began its transformation into the industrial and residential city it is today.

How is the weather in Norwalk?

It’s Southern California! It’s sunny! Daily high temps range from the low 80’s in July to the mid 60’s in January. There are fewer than 40 days of rainfall in the average year, with most coming from December to March.

How do I get around town?

Norwalk and its neighboring suburban cities -- Artesia, La Mirada, Whittier, Cerritos and Bellflower -- are served not only by five local bus lines but also by Long Beach Transit, Metrolink trains and the LA Metro, which provides bus and rail service to Los Angeles International Airport, about 15 miles distant. City streets are quiet and tucked away from the freeways.

What is the Norwalk commute like?

Three interstate highways serve the city. I-5 provides a direct route to downtown Los Angeles, I-105 runs east to the airport and the beaches and I-605 is the north-south beltway from Long Beach to Angeles National Forest. While freeways take you anywhere you want to go, they do present some of the challenges of Southern California traffic.

The Norwalk Patriot keeps locals up to date with news reporting specifically about the community. In addition, all of the newspapers and radio and TV stations of the Los Angeles area are available.

The proximity to Los Angeles provides residents of apartments in Norwalk with all the cultural, entertainment and recreational opportunities of one of the world’s great cities, as well as access to some of the nation’s top beaches. There is also a museum and an art gallery. Whether you want to fill your leisure time with activity or chill at home, Norwalk fits the bill.

What Norwalk landmarks should I see?

The most identifiable landmark is the distinctive Norwalk water tower with the city's name towering over the palms. Also, a commemorative plaque marks the spot of a 1958 aviation disaster, where two military planes collided overhead, killing 47 troops and a civilian. (Today it's the site of a little mall.) An 1891 architectural treasure, the Haggitt House, is open to the public as a museum. Norwalk is home to Cerritos College, a community college founded in 1955.

What is there to do around Norwalk?

The Norwalk Arts and Sports Complex has equipment equal to any in the region and supports activities from personal training to ping-pong. The Cultural Arts Center offers classes and workshops. The Gilbert Sproul Museum, named for a local founding father, is an historical resource that can provide you with an understanding of how Norwalk came to be what it is today. The Aquatic Center is a first-rate swimming facility with lap swim and lessons.

Any annual festivals or Norwalk events to know?

October is the big time for celebration, with the fall festival and several Halloween festivals taking place during the month. The Sanata Dharma Temple gets in on the act with a Grand Navrati Festival. And Dia de los Muertos never passes without a few community events.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Norwalk is the epicenter of America’s greatest tourist attractions. You'll never need to travel far when everything you want in a vacation is nearby! Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm are just down the road. Southern California’s world-famous beaches are less than 20 miles away. Every major professional sports league has a Los Angeles area franchise, and some are practically next door in Anaheim. Orchestra, art, museums, parks: you name it, the best the world has is there for your enjoyment.

Norwalk is a diverse community with a mix of white color and blue color workers and residents of many ethnic backgrounds. Popular neighborhoods are found throughout the city, in places such as City Center, San Antonio Drive, Norwalk Boulevard, Pioneer Boulevard and Bloomfield Avenue.
