Oneonta Overview

The apartments in Oneonta, NY, can be the ideal place to call home. This city in New York is smaller, with about 12,700 people calling it home, but it feels like a modern community offering a traditional suburban feel. There are a lot of reasons to call it home, including the wide range of local restaurants, parks, shops, and bars. It is noted as a friendly community with a bit of a small town vibe (even though it’s quite modern in its offerings) and an arts scene. With two colleges in the area, Oneonta offers great access to higher education.

What is the history of Oneonta?

Oneonta was long the home of the Algonquin and Iroquois speaking people. The Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy as said to have been prominent in the area prior to European arrival. The first American settlers didn’t arrive until around 1775 and it wasn’t until 1800 that a small hamlet developed in the area. By mid-century, the railroads had made it to the city, which helped to bring it to life with more people moving into the area. In 1908, the community was first incorporated into a city. 

How is the weather in Oneonta?

Like much of New York, Oneonta has rough winter months with temperatures around freezing or lower and hot summers with temperatures averaging in the 80s. It is a rather rainy area getting between 55 and 60 inches each year, and the area does see snow, generally about 50 inches a year. Humidity can also be a factor during the hot, sulky days of summer. Spring tends to be wet, with temperatures warming into the 60s and 70s. After the hot summer, the falls cool, crisp area is often a welcome experience. 

How do I get around town?

I-88 is the largest thoroughfare in the area, running along the outskirts of the city. The center of town is home to NY State Route 7 and NY State Route 23, both of which serve as many passenger resources. Oneonta Public Transit provides both a paratransit and a fixed route through the city with stops along Main Street. 

What is the Oneonta commute like?

Without a main highway running through the city, there is far less traffic in the city itself. Yet, that does not mean that the area doesn’t see backups during rush hour commutes. For example, I-88 is a main path through the region and tends to have drivers backed up onto the other routes nearby. Traffic tends to be at its highest level during the 7 am to 8:30 am hours and then again in the late afternoon around 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. 

What are the local media outlets?

Oneonta has several local TV channels, including WRGB, CBS, and WIZT, most of which are out of Schenectady. Those who are in the area also will find a large number of radio stations to log into, including WSRK, WKXZ, and WDHI. That includes news and talk radio, sports talk, and lots of music channels. The Daily Star is a daily paper that is available in the city, owned by Community Newspaper Holdings.

Why live in Oneonta, NY?

Oneonta has much to offer, including easy access to two college campuses and a wide range of restaurants, parks, and shops. The downtown area is a beautiful location with numerous architecturally beautiful spaces, and on the weekends, this is the place to be for nightlife. The city is notable for other reasons as well, including a strong school system and a wide range of green spaces, including areas for hiking and biking, sports complexes, and natural, open green areas. While it’s over an hour away from Albany, some people do live here and commute into the region for a variety of reasons. For many, the area’s natural beauty also makes it a highly desirable place to call home, especially for those that do not want to live in the urban jungle that surrounds the region. 

What Oneonta landmarks should I see?

When it comes to exploring all that Oneonta has to offer, the city has a few local landmarks, including Neahwa Park, which is an open greenspace, walking trail, and playground in the heart of the city. Wilbert Park is similar and offers a wide range of play structures. During the colder months, going skating at Interskate 88 is also an option. The city is also easy to recognize by its red brick downtown area. Aside from this, it is a community that is noted for Hartwick College and SUNY Oneonta, both universities that provide for the needs of a wide range of students. These colleges are notable as they have long served the community, with about 5,800 students at SUNY and about 1,500 at Hartwick. The city is also home to numerous buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Fairchild Mansion, Oneonta Armory, Stonehouse Farm, Bresee Hall, and Chapin Memorial Church. 

What is there to do around Oneonta?

Aside from heading to one of the area parks to explore, it’s possible to take in a baseball game at Oneonta Outlaws Damaschke Field or explore the nearby Joseph L. Popp, Jr. Butterfly Conservatory. Robert V. Riddell State Park is located close by. As a state park, it is a popular destination for those looking to enjoy a hike to a waterfall. A bit of a different experience is a trip to the Emmons Pond Bog, which is a quiet, nature-filled area. The city is much busier and has a higher traffic load when school is in session, but this is also when it’s possible to find pop-up food trucks and events taking place in the area. 

Any annual festivals or Oneonta events to know?

A few festivals take place in and around Oenota. That includes the Fall Harvest festival, which occurs during the fall months, creating an opportunity to enjoy pumpkins, cider, and hay rides. During the summer months, there’s also the annual Balloon Festival, which allows spectators and those who wish to get involved to take to the skies to watch the hot air balloons. During the holidays, Oenota does a great job of providing residents with fun activities, whether it is the over-the-top Halloween parade that takes place or the Christmas-themed décor and parade in December. There’s also a 4th of July event that takes place with fireworks. 

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

In the heart of New York, it’s easy to find lots to do around Oneonta, starting with a trip to Howe Caverns, which is about 45 minutes away. You could also visit the Roscoe Campsites or book a trip to the Guestward Ho Family Campground. Numerous cities are located about an hour away, including Smithville Flats, Windsor, Bridgewater, and Fort Plain. Taking a trip to the state capital is also an option since Albany is about 1 hour and 20 minutes away. 

Where is the best place to move in Oneonta?

For those looking for Oneonta, NY, there are a few common locations to check out. There are smaller apartment complexes in Oneonta with a significant number of opens along Route 7 and Main Street. There are numerous fantastic communities near the area surrounding Neahwa Park as well as in the northern area of the city. Some of the more popular neighborhoods here include Azalea Hills, Cross Creek, Deer Run, Mountain Brow Estates, and Oakbrook.
