"Orange was established as a ""rancho"" by a Spanish soldier in the 1800s. In the aftermath of the Mexican-American War, California was handed over to the United States with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. Orange was incorporated as a small town in 1888 as the only town in Orange County to be constructed around a plaza, which secured the city's original nickname of Plaza City. Orange was also the first town to be serviced by the California Southern Railroad, which may have led to the city's first growth spurt in the 1900s in the demand for California citrus. Agriculture constituted much of the local economy, with developments in real estate and the freeway system connecting it to Los Angeles encouraging more economic development. The same connections and growth today keep Orange a vibrant city with excellent links to large metropolitan areas. "
