Placentia Overview
Placentia, California, is a town of around 51,000 residents in northern Orange County. The county is home to internationally famous amusement parks like Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm and is also right next to Los Angeles and its many millions of people. Southern California is a vast metropolis encompassing several counties, and Placentia is just a tiny part. The community of Placentia is an interesting mixture of suburbia and urban sprawl, with excellent access to freeways and job centers like Anaheim and Orange. Many residents in Placentia commute during the week to jobs throughout Orange County. The city was once well-known for its proximity to the citrus industry and local farms, but the neighborhoods and apartments throughout Placentia have become more suburban rather than rural over the last half-century.
What is the history of Placentia?
When California was under Mexico's control, the governor routinely gave the country's citizens land grants. The area where the city of Placentia would eventually sit was a land grant given to a man named Juan Ontiveros. The region was named Rancho San Juan Cajon De Santa Ana and stretched across what would become the cities of Anaheim, Fullerton, Brea, and Placentia. Settlers and pioneers would arrive and settle in the middle of the 19th century, building schools, churches, and businesses along the way. The city's name is a Latin word that means "pleasant place to live, and residents would see its name on a map for the first time in 1910 when the Santa Fe Railroad was built nearby. People flocked to the area to participate in the growing citrus industry, and a network of streets was laid out by a pair of men named A.S. Bradford and Richard Melrose. Streets named in their honor still exist today.
How is the weather in Placentia?
Like the rest of Southern California, the climate in Placentia is considered a Mediterranean climate. Mediterranean climates receive most of their rain in the winter and experience dry summers. The average city in the United States gets 38 inches of rain a year, but Placentia receives about 14 inches of rain. Snow is infrequent in Placentia, and generally, the weather only gets cold enough for sleet or hail in the winter. Overall, the weather is beautifully pleasant for much of the year, with an average high in July of 85 degrees Fahrenheit and an average low in January of 45.
How do I get around town?
The most convenient option for getting around Placentia and the surrounding communities is via car. While there are options available for public transportation like buses and trains, the region isn't blessed with many convenient options for public transport. It's simply easier to get in a car and drive rather than hunt down a route for public transportation. The region has quite an impressive population of gig drivers, too, so catching a taxi, Uber, or Lyft ride is a breeze when you need it.
What is the Placentia commute like?
One of the hallmarks of Southern California is its traffic, and traffic jams routinely clog the 57 and 91 freeways, which are the closest main arteries to Placentia. For anyone who regularly commutes during rush hour, buying a pass for the express lanes on the 91 is a good idea. The express lanes give commuters four lanes along 18 miles of toll road. The on-ramps and off-ramps from the freeways often get clogged with traffic during rush hour, so shaving a few extra minutes off your commute by getting into the express lanes is a worthwhile investment. Despite the significant traffic in the area and all across Orange County, it is quite easy to get from point A to point B. Southern California has an excellent network of roads, routes, and freeways, even though the commuting times can get hairy.
What are the local media outlets?
Southern California vies for the world's media capital with New York City, and virtually all residents throughout the Southland watch the same well-known television stations for their local news and weather. CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox all offer local news stations. KTLA 5 is the local independent channel and broadcasts popular local news programs. CBS and Fox actually own two stations each, so there are seven options from which to choose when you want your local news.
Why live in Placentia, CA?
One of the best reasons to consider Placentia for your future apartment home is that the community offers a perfect balance between quiet suburbia and the big city. You're never far from anything when you live in Southern California, and Placentia is an excellent choice for anyone interested in living in a suburban environment that's just an hour away from the beach or mountains. If you drive west, you'll greet the gorgeous Pacific and Orange County's famous beaches. If you drive northeast, you'll see beautiful mountain cities like Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead. And beyond the benefits of nearby recreation, Placentia is also a solid place to live for commuters who work in larger cities of Orange County like Anaheim, Huntington Beach, and Orange.
What Placentia landmarks should I see?
Placentia's claim to fame isn't its landmarks. In fact, one of the most impressive vistas in the town is its water tower, which gives you an idea of the "small town in a city" vibe. The community does have an Old Town, which features shops and restaurants. The area was a familiar hangout spot for residents as far back as the 1960s. When you want Mexican food in Placentia, you'll head to Old Town.
What is there to do around Placentia?
When you first drive through Placentia, you'll notice that much of it feels like a large suburban neighborhood. The hospitable weather means many residents spend their leisure time in their backyard pools or strolling their neighborhood streets with their family pets. However, life isn't always so quiet for residents. Placentia's proximity to Disneyland and many beautiful beaches often means weekends are spent at the Happiest Place on Earth or on the sand with OC's classic beach volleyball nets. Knott's Berry Farm is another excellent place to spend time. The relative affordability of a season pass at Knott's versus the cost of a season pass from Disneyland means a Knott's pass is a must-purchase for any resident.
Any annual festivals or Placentia events to know?
Throughout the year, Placentia is home to a few small festivals. In October of each year, the city holds its Annual Placentia Heritage Festival and Parade, which usually starts with a pancake breakfast and family games at Tri-City Park. The event is also an opportunity for local businesses to share information about their products and services with local residents. There's also the Placentia Jazz & Art Festival & Louisiana Crawfish Boil, which is held in the spring and features several local bands.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
Southern California is the world's best place to live if you love "staycations." It doesn't take any more than an hour or two to surf, ski, hike, or bike around some of Southern California's most beautiful sights. There are ultra-famous touristy spots like the Hollywood Sign and the Santa Monica Pier for family outings and the beautiful vineyards to the southwest in cities like Temecula for adults-only wine tastings.
Where is the best place to move in Placentia?
Overall, Placentia residents enjoy low crime and a pretty peaceful lifestyle, as far as its neighborhoods are concerned. However, you'll want to be careful when touring your future Placentia apartment community because some areas of the community are near train tracks and regular train traffic. If you're particularly sensitive to train whistles and noises, make sure you take a listen outside of your future home to make sure it's quiet enough. Southwest Placentia is the busiest sector of the city. Some of the most beautiful neighborhoods sit above Yorba Linda Blvd., which travels east/west through the town.
