Addressing Your Apartment's Needs

Just like you, your apartment has needs! Sometimes these needs can go unnoticed, and if not dealt with properly, they could eventually turn into problems. While you can handle some issues yourself, others require attention from the management or maintenance team.

Often, they'll discover these needs without your notification, but occasionally you might need to alert them first. This is why it's important to pay attention to your apartment's needs.

What Are These Needs?

The Basics

Two fundamental aspects to cover:

  1. Change your air filter every couple of months or as suggested by the community.
  2. Keep a good battery in your smoke detector and ensure it's in working order.

Addressing these two basics is a good start in caring for your apartment.

Leaks

Leaks can be minor or major, but either way, they need fixing as soon as possible. Don't attempt any DIY plumbing or makeshift repairs. Your apartment management should handle any leak promptly, but you must report it first. Keep an eye out for running toilets, dripping faucets, or any other plumbing issues, and notify your manager immediately.

Air Conditioning

Beyond changing the filter, listen to the unit outside your window. When in good shape, there should be a constant low hum from the fan. It shouldn't be too loud or make erratic noises like squeaks. If it sounds different, even slightly, inform your manager so they can fix it before the fan fails.

Pest Control

Roaches and silverfish may indicate that you or your neighbors have cleanliness issues. The first time you see a pest (excluding your ex), report it to the leasing office so they can exterminate it as soon as possible. No pest is a good pest, so be sure to report this for your sake and your neighbors.

Doors and Windows

Check the seals around your front or back doors and windows to ensure they still shut securely. This is crucial for keeping out bugs and maintaining proper insulation to keep your energy bill down. If you see gaps where there shouldn't be any, report it to the office as soon as possible. Also, report any doors with bad hinges or broken windows.

Ceiling Fans

If your fan is wobbling or making noise, let your manager know before it becomes too loose and falls. The noise might seem tolerable when you're sleeping, but trust me, you don't want it to ever fall from the ceiling.

The Bottom Line

The key is to address small problems before they become bigger ones. And if an issue starts as significant, handle it ASAP. Remember that your apartment management team is always there for you. So don't hesitate the next time your toilet won't stop making funny noises!
