Salt Lake City Overview
Salt Lake City, Utah, is the capital and biggest city in Utah. Often shortened to Salt Lake or SLC, the city is home to the headquarters of the Mormon faith. SLC is relatively culturally diverse and is consistently rated in the top 100 US cities to live in. Unemployment is below national average, getting around town is convenient and the options for places to live in a home or one of the many great Salt Lake City apartments provides the folks who live here a prime spot to call home.
What is the history of Salt Lake City?
In 1847, Brigham Young and other founders of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, settled in the valley and established the city. They invested heavily in irrigation and cultivated the valley to create a home where they could worship without persecution. As they cultivated the land, Young and his followers began to build the city, starting with the Salt Lake Temple on a block that would later be named Temple Square. These earlier pioneers organized a new state, Deseret, and petitioned for statehood in 1893. However, Congress declined the petition and established the Utah Territory instead. Prior to the Mormon settlement, the valley was home to itinerant Native American tribes including the Shoshone, Ute, and Paiute, who traveled through following hunting and good weather. SLC is home to Promontory Summit, where the First Transcontinental Railroad was completed in 1869, which brought many immigrant groups to the city. In 2002, SLC hosted the winter Olympics.
How is the weather in Salt Lake City?
Salt Lake City has a dry continental climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. The late summer is the rainy season when many large storms are blown in from the Pacific Ocean by the jet stream. The average snowfall is 60 inches annually and the Great Salt Lake can contribute to lake effect snowfall.
How do I get around town?
The city is designed on a grid system and the older parts include wide tree lined streets. Due to the sprawl, many rely on cars. However, Salt Lake City has a mass transit service operated by the Utah Transit Authority which is considered to be the third best in the nation at connecting people with jobs. Public Transportation includes a bus system, light rail, and a commuter rail line. The light rail system has over 50 stops and with an average daily ridership of over 60,000. The bus system is also expansive while the commuter rail line connects Davis County in the north through the city to Provo in the south. SLC is also considered a bike friendly city and the first in the United States to introduce the Green Shared Lane concept on streets where adding a bike lane on the side of the road would not be possible. Salt Lake City International Airport is a Delta hub with over 100 non-stop destinations.
What is the Salt Lake City commute like?
Major transcontinental highways I-15 and I-80 intersect in Salt Lake City. I-215 provides a ring road around the city and the Legacy Parkway is one of the main roads to Davis County. There are only four roads that run between the two counties due to the limited space available between the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mountains resulting in heavy traffic during rush hours. The surface streets are set in a numbered grid system. Each road is numbered with a north, south, east or west designation. Many named streets have a grid coordinate as well.
What are the local media outlets?
SLC residents read catch up on headlines with two major newspapers, the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News and other specialized publications including Now Salt Lake, Salt Lake City Weekly, Neustro Mundo, and The Pillar.
