You can’t help but picture the majestic Golden Gate Bridge catching the California sunlight or that unforgettable taste of the world’s most delicious sourdough. (I personally love nothing more than a stroll through Golden Gate Park followed by a hearty seafood meal on Fisherman’s Wharf.)
But what’s it really like to call San Francisco home? Where are the most affordable places to live, and how can you choose a perfect fit for your lifestyle and needs? The Hub
If you love the idea of moving to a San Francisco neighborhood with a dense urban feel to it, the Hub is absolutely an option to take a closer look at. Named for its location at the crossroads of Van Ness Avenue and Market Street, the Hub is fast-paced and energetic.
It’s also quickly evolving, with new buildings under construction every year, including multiple high-rise residential complexes. The Hub is also home to affordable housing initiatives designed to support a diverse environment that includes young adults and various income-eligible buyers.
Residents of the Hub enjoy easy access to robust public transit options, like CalTrain, BART, and Muni. They’re also pleasantly close to major cultural centers, such as the Mission and Hayes Valley.
Mission Bay
Mission Bay features the kind of views of beautiful San Francisco Bay that people write songs about. It’s also the location of UCSF Mission Bay, as well as many of the city’s top tech companies, making it a great location for pursuing new opportunities.
Catch a concert or a Golden State Warriors game at Chase Center while you’re here. Take a stroll through idyllic Mission Bay Park, or grab a quick bite at the Spark Social food park. If you love getting out and about, you have plenty of choices here, including numerous outdoor options.
In Mission Bay, you’ll find a mixture of classic houses and condos up for grabs, as well as access to many modern apartment complexes. It’s also worth noting that the neighborhood is very walkable, with growing access to public transit options, like the Third Street light rail line.
Rincon Hill
Looking for a vibrant, energetic neighborhood that offers easy access to some truly incredible professional opportunities? Rincon Hill is strategically located right next to downtown San Francisco and is a particularly popular pick for those working in the city’s famous Financial District.
The general vibe of the neighborhood is urban upscale and features multiple high-rise residential buildings to consider. However, there are plenty of traditional housing options available, as well. Stunning views of the Bay Bridge are plentiful and residents enjoy convenient access to nearby cafes, retail options, and charming waterfront restaurants.
Public transportation access in Rincon Hill is exceptional and includes a robust bus system and multiple light rail lines.
Japantown
Known for its unique attractions and rich culture-focused vibe, Japantown is one of the more affordable neighborhoods in San Francisco. However, it’s still highly connected to important amenities, thanks to its proximity to the city’s downtown area. This makes it a great choice for commuters in search of budget-friendly living options.

Downtown San Francisco
Are you someone who dreams of living right at the heart of the action in San Francisco? You might want to consider moving to downtown San Francisco itself. It’s high-energy, bustling, and vibrant to the max – the type of place where there’s always something going on and something to do.
Downtown living options include everything from trendy lofts to high-rise condos to sleek modern apartments with a wealth of amenities. You’ll also find quirky, character-rich older buildings that have been converted into unique living spaces over the years.
Access to public transportation is naturally excellent downtown. However, you’re also just a short stroll away from multiple venues and attractions. Explore countless dining options, museums, theaters, and cultural attractions.
South of Market (SoMa)
Commonly known as SoMa (short for “South of Market Street”), Yerba Buena proper is famous for its rich culture and dynamic energy, thanks to its location right at the heart of San Francisco’s downtown area.
Like many neighborhoods located here, residents enjoy easy access to Michelin-star dining experiences, amazing shopping opportunities, and world-class entertainment venues. It’s home to several major cultural centers, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and Yerba Buena Gardens. You’re right next door to historic landmarks like St. Patrick’s Church, as well.

Central Waterfront

Fort Mason
