Sanford has an extensive history dating back to 1661. Major William Phillips purchased the land from an Abenaki native chief and named the area Phillipstown. In 1739, residents finally settled, but it only became an official city nearly thirty years later. The early 1800’s changed the direction of the town as entrepreneurs built a mill and factory on the Springvale waterfall. The industry flourished and evolved over the next few decades. They produced cutting-edge cloth, namely the novel Mohair Plush and Palm Beach Cloth. These fabrics put Sanford on the map, grew the local economy, and attracted numerous new inhabitants. Unfortunately, in 1953, the mills closed down. As a result, the community suffered a steep decline. However, locals never gave up their pride or dampened their spirits. Instead, they invested in different industries and welcome new businesses to this day.
