Fur traders were the next permanent residents in the area, according to The History Museum. Pierre Navarre, a white settler, opened a standing trading post in the 1820s. Because of its location on the river, South Bend thrived on heavy industrial development from groups such as the Studebaker Corporation and the Oliver Chilled Plow Company.
