Spokane Overview
If you’ve been dreaming of a smaller city with a home-town feel, Spokane may be what you’re looking for. Spokane is the birthplace of “Father’s Day,” and the city boasts a variety of beautiful parks for enjoying the sunshine. Best of all, apartments in Spokane tend to be reasonably priced.
What is the history of Spokane?
" Spokane has been inhabited for around 13,000 years. The original settlers were the Spokane people, who found the area perfect for hunting. Western settlers began to develop the area in the late-1800s, and the city has grown from there. It was the host of the 1974 World’s Fair."
How is the weather in Spokane?
Summers in Spokane are hot and dry, with temperatures in the low-80s. Winters are cold, with temperatures in the low-30s, but you won’t find a significant amount of snow. The Cascade and Rocky Mountains tend to protect the area from some of the weather patterns you’d typically see in surrounding areas.
How do I get around town?
" The city does have a public bus system that can take you to many of the major areas in the city, but most residents find that it’s more convenient to have a car. The airport is the second largest in the state and is just five miles outside of the city."
What is the Spokane commute like?
I-90 goes through Spokane. This is the major road that passes through many states across the country. Most Spokane residents tend to use some of the smaller highways, though, such as Route 2 and Route 395. City streets are in grid formation, with streets running east-west and north-south, making it easy to get around.
What are the local media outlets?
Spokane has a variety of popular radio stations to suit different tastes, and has major network-affiliated TV stations. The only daily newspaper is The Spokesman-Review, and those looking for an alternative weekly might like The Inlander.
Why live in Spokane, WA?
Spokane offers many of the benefits of living in a larger community, such as access to museums and other cultural events. With five colleges in the area, there’s an educated, “college town” feel that’s attractive to many people. However, the way that the city encourages community engagement allows you to feel like you can get to know your neighbors. This makes the city perfect for those who want a city lifestyle but don’t want to get lost in a city as big as New York or Seattle.
What Spokane landmarks should I see?
At the time it was built, the Monroe Street Bridge was the longest concrete bridge. It’s still an impressive site. Residents also like to head out to Green Bluff, a farm that offers fresh produce and a variety of activities throughout the year.
What is there to do around Spokane?
" Art lovers will enjoy touring Spokane’s many art museums. You can also take a tour of Bing Crosby’s childhood home. Whether you want to bike, walk, or jog, the Centennial Trail offers 40 miles of paved trails that meander through parks and the downtown area."
Any annual festivals or Spokane events to know?
Spokane is famous for its fragrant lilacs, so you’ll want to be sure to check out the annual Lilac Festival, which is held in late-May as the lilacs start to bloom. If you want to taste the local flavors, head to the Pig Out in the Park festival held at the end of the summer. Most vendors offer inexpensive “sample plates” so you never get too full.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
Spokane Falls and the area around the Spokane River is a great location for a camping vacation. There are opportunities for great fishing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting. In the winter, you can hit the trails to ski the Rocky Mountains. Those who aren’t fans of skiing might still enjoy tubing at Bear Creek Lodge.
Where is the best place to move in Spokane?
" The areas south of I-90 are particularly popular neighborhoods, including Latah Valley, Comstock, and Rockwood. North Hill and Emerson-Garfield might be good choices if you work downtown, while the West Hills neighborhood is close to the airport. As a small city, you’ll find that most of the areas in the city are safe for residents, so the smartest move it to find apartments in Spokane that offer an easy commute to your workplace or school."
