History is celebrated through museums and historic buildings, while its diversity is celebrated through lively festivals year-round. Finally, Waukegan is a convenient drive from both Chicago and Milwaukee. This lets residents visit those cities when they want a change of pace.

Waukegan, named from the Potawatomi word for 'Little Fort', has a proud history as an abolitionist community. In the 19th century it became a local hub for farming and shipbuilding. However, record temperatures have reached 108 in July and -27 in January. Residents know to expect the unexpected when it comes to the weather here. This town gets regular precipitation year-round and has snowy winters.

How do I get around town?

The harbor is another option here, with a marina with facilities for boaters. Finally, the Robert McClory bike path runs for 25 miles north-south alongside the coast. This path runs near the coast and connects the Kenosha and Evanston areas.

What is the Waukegan commute like?

I-94 and Highway 41 both run north-south, letting residents connect to Milwaukee, Chicago, and other towns alongside the lake. Heading west to Rockford and beyond? Check out IL-120 and IL-132. Traffic on the interstate gets competitive during rush hour thanks to commuters to the big cities. However, locals working within town don't have as much difficulty with the commute when they travel on smaller roads.
