Adelanto Overview

Adelanto, CA, is a small town in the High Desert of San Bernardino County and is home to around 38,000 residents. The comrmunity sits just north of the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles and is separated from it by the Angeles National Forest and the San Gabriel Mountains. Adelanto means "progress" or "advance" in Spanish, which is appropriate given the recent and rapid gowth of the region's population. Adelanto is a quiet place that boasts an impressive amount of wide-open space. Still, the next several years should see it continue to grow as Los Angeles residents migrate out of the busy city and into the more relaxed region of the Inland Empire.

What is the history of Adelanto?

Adelanto is a town that looks like it may have sprung out of the desert without much effort, but the community's history is actually quite interesting. A man named E.H. Richardson, who invented the Hotpoint electric iron, founded the town more than a century ago in 1915. His goal was to create a planned community in Southern California where injured veterans of World War I could live. Although Richardson never saw his dream fulfilled, his initial efforts laid the groundwork for modern-day Adelanto's streets and neighborhoods. The city was officially incorporated in 1970 and was made a charter city in 1992.

How is the weather in Adelanto?

Adelanto sits in the arid expansive high desert and experiences impressively hot temperatures in the summer and beautiful weather in the winter. Residents routinely see temperatures breach 100F in the summer, but the winter months offer comfortable daytime temperatures in the 50s and 60s. Despite the broiling summer temperatures, the region enjoys low humidity for much of the year, making the community a comfortable choice for retirees or anyone who isn't a fan of moist environments.

How do I get around town?

Public transportation isn't the easiest option to get around in Adelanto, but the city is served by a public transportation system called the Victor Valley Transit Authority (VVTA). Bus lines link Adelanto to fellow high desert communities like Hesperia, Victorville, and Barstow. Buses run from 6 AM to 9 PM during the week, with limited hours on Saturday and no service on Sunday. As is the case in virtually all Southern California cities, Adelanto's best transportation option is a car. Rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft serve the community, too, but owning a vehicle is usually the best option when you have regular errands to run or you often head south into Los Angeles County for work.

What is the Adelanto commute like?

The major highways that run near Adelanto are Interstate 15, which is the primary corridor for traffic traveling between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Nevada, and Route 395. For residents of Adelanto, commutes south into Los Angeles are expected, with rush-hour drives taking at least an hour. Although the traffic inside Adelanto is never frightful, the I15 can become a parking lot sometimes, so some careful planning is necessary when you have an appointment or event that will require travel on the interstate.

What are the local media outlets?

If you're interested in a local newspaper for Adelanto, you'll want to pick up a copy of "The Adelanto Bulletin," which is the primary local paper. Stories in "The Los Angeles Times" routinely feature information about Adelanto and local concerns, making the periodical a valuable reference for locals and anyone living in apartments in Adelanto. On television, local stations come out of Los Angeles and include KCBS, KNBC, KTLA (The CW), and KABC, which are all available with a digital antenna. Fox also has a channel with KTTV on channel 11, and KCAL 9 is a popular independent channel. Radio stations, too, come from Los Angeles. Listeners frequently tune into KOST 103.5 FM for chill, contemporary music and KRTH 101.1 FM for oldies.

Why live in Adelanto, CA?

The motto of Adelanto is "The City with Unlimited Possibilities," and that was never truer than today. Many of the desert towns of the region have experienced significant population growth in the last decade, which has created more nearby jobs and recreational opportunities near Adelanto apartments. The high desert offers residents the chance to enjoy a lower cost of living than nearby Los Angeles County while sitting just an hour or two away from all the famous locations around Southern California like Venice Beach to the west, Disneyland to the south, and Palm Springs to the east.

What Adelanto landmarks should I see?

Adelanto isn't a city where you'll find internationally renowned landmarks like the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty, but it's just a short drive from apartments in Adelanto to some of the well-known landmarks around San Bernardino County. If you travel about 40 miles north to Barstow, you can visit Harvey House, built in 1911 as Casa del Desierto and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Today, the building houses a few museums and some local government offices. About 50 miles to the north of Adelanto is the Calico ghost town, which was once a mining town in the late 1800s and was made a California Historical Landmark by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2005.

What is there to do around Adelanto?

Adelanto has a relatively relaxed atmosphere owing to its small population, but some fun things to do are just a stone's throw away. If you haven't seen it before, the California Route 66 Museum in Victorville is worth a visit, and the staff is known as a knowledgeable and friendly group of history buffs. Another entertaining way to spend an afternoon is to drive about 20 minutes north of Adelanto to visit Elmer Long's Bottle Tree Ranch. The quirky venue is even popular with international tourists. If you're in the mood for some strange and extreme geography, you might take a ride over to El Mirage Lake, which is popular with local off-road enthusiasts and is located to the east of the airfield.

Any annual festivals or Adelanto events to know?

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which is one of the biggest and trendiest music festivals in the world, happens each year just a few hours away from Adelanto. The festival is a little pricey, though, but that doesn't mean you're out of luck if you want to enjoy a live music festival. If you drive about an hour to the east, you'll reach Wonder Valley, which is home to the High Desert Soundings Music Festival. If you enjoy curling up with a nice book each night in your Adelanto apartment, you might want to visit the High Desert Book Festival. It's held each year in Hesperia and is literally just a quick drive across to the other side of Interstate 15.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

If you choose to live in Adelanto apartments, you'll definitely enjoy the proximity of this small community to giant and internationally renowned venues like Disneyland and the Hollywood Strip. However, day trips and weekenders galore are within easy driving distance from Adelanto. They include rustic mountain towns like Lake Arrowhead, world-class beaches like Zuma Beach in Malibu, and a plethora of national parks like Joshua Tree, Channel Islands, Sequoia, and Death Valley.

Where is the best place to move in Adelanto?

The community covers just 52 square miles, so it's a relatively small desert town, but you still have a wealth of Adelanto apartments that feature excellent perks like swimming pools and covered parking. Along Route 395 (the same 395 that travels all the way north along the gorgeous Eastern Sierras), you'll find several neighborhoods and apartments, as well as conveniences like local restaurants and shopping venues. Start exploring the dozens of options for apartments in Adelanto; you'll undoubtedly find an ideal new home.
