Akron is the fifth-largest city in Ohio. Located in the northeastern part of the state, Akron is 40 miles south of Cleveland. "Founded in December 1825 by Simon Perkins, Akron was known as the ""Rubber Capital of the World"" during much of the 20th century. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, The Goodrich Corporation, and Firestone Tire and Rubber Company all had their headquarters in Akron at various times. Today, over 150 Fortune 500 companies are located in the region. Akron is a world-renowned center for polymer research. The region also has a rich cultural history, it was part of the Underground Railroad, and Akron was where Sojourner Truth delivered her famous ""Ain't I A Woman?"" speech in 1851."
How is the weather in Akron?
Akron is in a humid continental climate. There are four separate seasons. Winters tend to be dry and cold, with a combination of snow, sleet and rain, though heavy snowfall is rare. Winter temperatures generally hover around 26.1 °F. The Spring season sees heavier rainfall, while the Summer season is marked by warm and humid weather. Fall is very pleasant and dry for the most part.
How do I get around town?
While it's easiest to get around Akron by car, the city does have good public transportation. The METRO Regional Transit Authority system, which has buses and trolleys, offers local service and buses to downtown Cleveland. METRO RTA's operating center, the Intermodal Transit Center, offers Greyhound bus service. Akron also has the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority, which offers bus service between Akron and Canton. The Akron-Canton Regional Airport is the city's major airport and serves approximately 2 million passengers annually. There is no passenger rail service in Akron, though there is the Akron Northside Station on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
What is the Akron commute like?
There are two main interstate highways in Akron: Interstate 77 and Interstate 76, which bisect the city. These, however, do not bisect downtown Akron or the city's Central Business District, which are served by the Akron Innerbelt and the Ohio State Route 8. Interstate 77 runs between Marietta, Ohio, and Cleveland, Ohio. Interstate 76 runs between Interstate 71 and Youngstown, Ohio, and the surrounding areas. These two major interstate highways intersect in the eastern part of Akron. Peak traffic hours in Northeast Ohio are between 7:30 and 8:30 am. There are usually few problems with traffic outside of these hours.

A Pulitzer Prize-winning paper, The Akron Beacon Journal is the only daily newspaper in Akron. Akron is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton television market, and is served by WEAO (PBS), WAOH-CD, WVPX (ION) and WBNX-TV (CW). The city has a number of radio stations as well, including WZIP 88.1 (Top 40) and news and talk stations, including NPR (WKSU 89.7), WHLO 640, WJMP 1520 and WNIR-FM 100.1.
