Health Hazard
October 30, 2021I was moved into a unit that was a bit of a fixer-upper. It had primarily cosmetic concerns aside from a leaky faucet. We were able to negotiate a good deal and a shorter lease because of this. After being in the apartment for a few hours, my lungs started feeling kind of funky. Once I left the apartment, they would feel better. The next day, we were going to thoroughly clean the entire thing. After a few hours, my lungs started feeling bad again. Our bathroom wasn't getting hot water, so we ...checked the kitchen faucet to see if that one was. We kept it on for a very short period of time because of the leak. After turning it off, we noticed water was still leaking for several minutes. Under the sink, a piece of linoleum was stapled to the wood on the bottom of the cabinet. We decided to tear it out and found what appeared to be at least a year, if not multiple years, worth of water damage. The water was leaking directly into an active outlet, posing a fire hazard as well. The water damage caused the wood to warp downwards at least two inches, and there was water damage all over the bottom, left side, right side by the dishwasher, and in cabinets on the opposite side of the dishwasher too. The wood had mold on it, and the linoleum piece covering had a lot of mold on it as well. We noticed the floor was creaking in some areas and had sunken down under the linoleum, which we are assuming also was extended water damage. This was an upper unit, so the damage is seeping down into the unit below us. The entire apartment smelled of mold and both my partner and I were feeling respiratory effects from it after only being in there for a combined 12 hours. The property manager was argumentative with us about the mold and tried to make it seem like an "us" issue rather than an issue with the unit. We gave him permission to go in the apartment without us to look at the scenario and when we returned, we found the mold partially cleaned up, and the mold smell was replaced with a chemical one. He was incredibly condescending and rude. After he spoke with the landlords about the situation though, the landlords wanted to immediately terminate the lease and let us go with a full refund on everything, including the application fee. I would not recommend anyone to live here regardless of the price. Aside from the poor management, it could be a serious health concern.Read MoreReview from Apartments.com
