Asheville Overview
Asheville, North Carolina is a great little city in which to work, shop, dine and explore by car, bike or on foot. Asheville apartments are an ideal location from which to take advantage of new sights, sounds, tastes and experiences in arts, dining, music, history, outdoor living and award-winning craft beer consumption.
What is the history of Asheville?
From its perch in the Great Smoky Mountains, Asheville has been a settled community since the late 18th century. Pride in its past is stamped into the Art Deco stylings of many downtown buildings constructed during the Roaring Twenties. Famous Asheville residents of the past include George Vanderbilt, who constructed Biltmore Estate as a country estate in the late nineteenth century. Thomas Wolfe wrote about his hometown in his classic novel, Look Homeward, Angel.
How is the weather in Asheville?
Living in Asheville, you’ll experience four mostly gentle seasons. Because of the city’s mountain altitude, summers stay comfortably cool. The winters are rarely extreme or see much snow, while autumn brings on an explosion of leafy color that draws tourists with cameras.
How do I get around town?
Many Asheville residents are outdoor lovers, so going places by foot or bike comes natural. Neighborhoods are in or near the city center to allow walking or easy car commutes. The city also offers bus service seven days a week throughout Asheville and neighboring Black Mountain while vintage trolley cars roam the streets.
What is the Asheville commute like?
Newcomers who are used to much larger metropolises will enjoy the intimacy of this smaller city. For most people, it’s not more than a 15-minute commute. Blue Ridge Parkway, one of America’s most scenic highways, intersects Asheville at four locations. The Ashville Regional Airport is only 10 miles away and provides non-stop and connecting flights for some 750,000 passengers annually.
What are the local media outlets?
Asheville-based radio stations play Country (WWNC-AM), Light Rock (WOXL) and gospel (WKJV) formats. Weightier matter is found via public radio station WCQS and Progressive News/Talk programmer WPVM. The daily newspaper is the Asheville Citizen-Times and the ABC affiliate WLOS/TV13 calls Asheville home.
Why live in Asheville, NC?
When Good Morning America set out to find the “10 Most Beautiful Places in America” in 2011, Asheville landed on the top spot. The national morning show said the city was “rich with art, architecture and outstanding scenery.” That’s only one point of pride for a community that’s received media honors for years. WhileTopRetirements.com named it the most popular city for retiring to in 2014, the following year the Huffington Post included Asheville among its “20 U.S. Cities You Must Visit in Your 20s.” Yes, Asheville is truly timeless. Perhaps that’s one reason the Huffington Post (again) named it among its “9 Most Romantic Cities in the South” in 2015.
What Asheville landmarks should I see?
One million visitors a year are drawn from all over the world to see the resplendent grounds and majestic home that comprise Biltmore Estate. This 250-room French Renaissance chateau was completed in 1895 by George Vanderbilt and opened to the public in 1930—to acclaim that has never died. Shoppers and sightseers all find much to appreciate in downtown’s Grove Arcade, restored in 2002 to its Art Deco origins. Asheville is also home to the breathtaking Basilica of St. Lawrence and to the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
What is there to do around Asheville?
The city’s many restaurants, art studios, galleries and music venues make for intriguing days and a dynamic nightlife. Known as Beer City USA since 2009 for its abundance of breweries and brew pubs, Asheville invites you to sample the approximately 100 locally brewed craft beers while you catch the beat of an historical yet vibrant city. Or grab a backpack and head to the great outdoors and breathtaking mountain scenery that’s just out your front door.
Any annual festivals or Asheville events to know?
From the springtime Festival of Flowers at Biltmore Estate to the Annual Warren Haynes Christmas Jam, named by the London Times as “one of the top ten concerts in the USA,” there’s always something to see, sway to and put in your mental scrapbook from festive Asheville.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Where is the best place to move in Asheville?
Is your preference the city center with its Downtown Arts District cafes, drinking establishments and art galleries, or a sleepier suburb with wide streets and green lawns? The neighborhoods, such as trendy West Asheville or the “outlying” city of Black Rock are only minutes away by car, so too long a drive to work will never hamper your apartment selection here. The planned community of Biltmore Park, with its unique housing, shopping, dining and entertainment venues—as well as several nearby apartment complexes—is only 12 miles outside of the city limits. Come see the city and explore the opportunity from different vantage points. You’ll be sure to find nearby apartments in Asheville you’ll love.
