Biloxi Overview

With a population of approximately 44,820, Biloxi, MS shares its urban center with Gulfport and is the home of the U.S. Air force Reserve. What is the history of Biloxi?

Established in 1699, Biloxi history is filled with handovers, from the original owners from France, to Great Britain, Spain and then finally the United States, in 1817. Biloxi became a major place for vacationing, with its summer cottages and hotels, as well the advantage of being in proximity to New Orleans. Although, capture by Union soldiers during the Civil War, Biloxi never saw any major fighting and basically went through it unscathed. Later on, a railroad and seafood cannery were built, which brought more people to the town with different background including Black and Jewish people. As Biloxi became an increasing popular resort, hotels started hiring French and Swiss chefs to prepare the cuisine. In 1991, gambling was legalized and Biloxi became known as “The Poor Man’s Riviera” of the Southern, United States. Even though Hurricane Katrina damaged a few casinos in 2005, eight of them have reopened. There are on-going plans to fortify and redeveloped the effected areas around the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

How is the weather in Biloxi?

Since the Gulf Coast determines weather of this sub-tropical area, you will mostly have mild temperatures throughout the year. Spring is usually between the low of 52 - 83 °F, while the summer averages between 75 - 90 °F. Fall temperature ranges between 79 - 45 °F and Winter is usually between 76 - 43 °F. As with any city on the water, Biloxi is prone to hurricanes, flooding and storms.

How do I get around town?

Getting around Biloxi is easy because Highway 90 goes right past the casinos as well as the beach, it runs east to west connecting you to Gulfport Pascagoula and Ocean Springs. First used privately by the United States Air Force in 1942, Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport was declared for civil use by 1949. It expansion includes 1400 acres and it is served by United, Delta and American Eagle. For those wanting to visit the casinos and do not want to bother with a car, you can take the Casino Hopper. This affordable bus shuttle offers destinations to Casino Row every 15 minutes. Of course, walking along the tranquil white beaches and watching or better yet, riding in a shrimp boats or on an oyster schooner is a wonderful way to enjoy Biloxi!

What is the Biloxi commute like?

Highway 90 is the major road, which runs through Biloxi coastal area. This road tends to become congested during spring break. Other than that, you should not have any problem in getting around town. If you would like to head toward New Orleans (takes about 90 minutes) or Los Angeles, you could take Interstate 10 headed north. Interstate 110 is an evacuation route, in the event of a hurricane. Other highways in Biloxi are 15 and 67.

Seafood cook-off’s, parties and the crowning of the shrimp King and Queen is part of the festivities.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Only nine minutes away across Biloxi Bay Bridge, you will find the charming town of Ocean Springs. With its magnificent oak tree lined streets, this town is like a throwback to simpler times. You can go to the nostalgic Lovelace Drugstore for a cream soda and sandwich. Thirteen miles away you have the town of Gulfport, filled with all types of cool things to do. For instance, the Mississippi Coast Model Railroad Museum has indoor and outdoor trains for youngsters to play with and ride, as well as various rooms with train exhibits for the young at heart. For the adventurous type, you can checkout the Zip'N Fun Adventure Park. Fifty games are available as you wobble across rope bridges, climb ropes, swing through the air on logs and speed across the zip lines.
