What is the history of Bloomfield?
Bloomfield’s first settlers were of English and Dutch descent, creating this area in 1666. The area was part of Newark initially and included the areas of Montclair, Glen Ridge, Belleville, and Nutley. The first school was created in 1758. While it was public, but it was not free. In 1812, Bloomfield was incorporated as a township. In 1849, Bloomfield was one of the first towns in the state to adopt the Free School Act. Bloomfield is named after Joseph Bloomfield, who served in the Third New Jersey Regiments as a major from 1776-1778. When Bloomfield was just incorporated in 1812, the population was just 3,085 people. Their three waterways, the Second and Third Rivers, and Toney’s Brook were sources for sawmills and gristmills, the very first industries. Their sandstone was exported to New York City to build brownstones as early as 1765.
