The Original Southern Bistro is the way that Carolina's Restaurant characterizes itself. Bistro, however, would be a quaint description for this beautiful, classy restaurant that is surely a destination for Charleston apartment-ites. In a building dating from the American Revolution times, it's a historic site for Charleston that is a culinary landmark. Formerly the location of world-renowned Perdita's, Carolina's serves menu items from their original menu to respect the previous restaurant. Classic Southern inspired foods are served here, many with a contemporary flavor for a more memorable experience. Tempt your palate with the tasty appetizers including braised pork belly with sautéed cabbage and carrot puree, or dip into Prince Edward Island mussels, shrimp crabmeat wontons or Carolina's crab cakes. Cauliflower goat cheese soup or duck confit and arugula salad with honeyed shallot, dried cranberries with candied garlic vinaigrette can be your next choice on the menu, with a delightful selection of entrees to follow. Even if you are from the south, some of these recipes are probably not typically cooked in your Charleston apartment. Choose from crispy fried whole flounder with homemade peach jam, pan-seared diver scallops, grilled USDA prime rib eye steak, or Carolina shrimp and grits for your main course. All entrees are served with a delightful combination of veggies or potatoes, but a side of grits, collard greens or fried green tomatoes may be ordered separately. Many of the fresh produce are procured from nearby Kensington Plantation and Boone Hall Plantation, giving it a fresh taste and southern flavor. Lunch, for the downtown worker who doesn't want to have to drive back close to the office from his or her Charleston apartment to enjoy a divine meal, is served at Carolina's too. The restaurant serves lunch Monday through Friday, 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. Dinner is served nightly from 5 pm. Happy hour is Monday through Friday, 5 pm to 7 pm, with $4 cocktails and 50% off the bar menu.
