For history-loving apartment-ites, the German Village Society is something that has to be seen to be fully experienced. This is a recreation of the history of the 233-acre German Village neighborhood of Columbus, and replicates every authentic detail of the periods right down to the letter. This preserved community includes four parks and rose gardens, some German bakeries, cafes and confection shops (try the cookies from Bierberg Bakery), and a string of gift shops, galleries and small craft museums. Also in the village are a small theatre company and a rec centre. There really is a lot to take in here, but there's something for everyone; much of the experience is just wandering around, taking some guided tours, or a spot of shopping. One shop - The Dog Works/Cats2, not only sells holistic pet supplies but also offers to pet sit for you while you're exploring the village. There's also a 70,000 square foot marketplace teeming with local crafts, gifts and trinkets. But most impressive is The Book Loft of German Village, a 32-room bookstore featuring mostly modern books, with a courtyard for relaxing. If you get lost or aren't sure what to do, there's a helpful visitor's centre in the Village, and it's worth checking out the events calendar to see what's going on at the main event venue, The Meeting Haus.
