La Jolla Overview

If you're searching for apartments in La Jolla, you're going to find one of the friendliest neighborhoods in San Diego. La Jolla is a great place to raise a family. Or, you might want to move here because you're attending The University of California, San Diego. You could even retire here because there are lots of options for senior living apartments in La Jolla. Whatever your reason, you'll find near-perfect weather, a welcoming community, and lots to see and do close to any La Jolla apartments your pick.

What is the history of La Jolla?

La Jolla incorporated as part of San Diego in 1850. Frank Botsford, AKA, the Father of La Jolla, bought land in 1868 and began developing it with George Heald. Later, the railroads made it easier for people to get to the area, and real estate developers started to build resorts to attract visitors. By the end of the 1800s, cottage-style homes lined Prospect Street and Girard Avenue, transforming La Jolla into a place for artists. During the 1920s, Spanish inspired houses began to replace the earlier cottages. And after WWII, there was an influx of military families who settled in La Jolla in large subdivisions. By 1960, over 17,000 people lived here. Today, those numbers have grown to over 40,000.

How is the weather in La Jolla?

Warm days and clear skies can stretch from June to October, with an average temperature ranging from 67°F to 77°F. The hottest part of the summer lasts between the end of July through the end of September when temperatures can get as high as 85°F. From November through April, expect average daily temperatures to range between above 50°F through  67°F. And the coldest days are around Christmas time with temperatures at 50°F.

How do I get around town?

La Jolla is 14 miles north from the San Diego International Airport. You can use the San Diego Metropolitan System's route 30 bus that runs between San Diego, Old Town, and North County, with a stop at Silverado and Herschel in downtown La Jolla. Alternatively, you can hop Amtrak or the Coaster, with connections in the Old Town Transit Center, San Diego, and Sorrento Valley Coaster Station.

What is the La Jolla commute like?

Driving in from the south and the airport, take I-5 North to the La Jolla Parkway exit. If you're heading in from the north, Take I-5 South and the La Jolla Village Drive exit. And from the east, travel on 79 South to the I-8 West. Use exit 17 State 67/Magnolia Ave toward downtown to merge onto CA-67 North. Follow the Prospect Avenue Exit for CA-52 West. Then, use the left two lanes to take the La Jolla Parkway exit. La Jolla Pkwy becomes Torrey Pines Road to the west. Prospect, Cave Street, and Coast Blvd are all major thoroughfares that you'll want to explore, as well. Traffic in San Diego is busy. It's a good idea to plan your trips accordingly. Try WAZE, San Deigo, to get up to the minute traffic reports and directions for the best routes to take.
