Largo Overview

Largo is a suburb of Tampa Bay in beautiful sunny Florida just south of Clearwater. ItÆs the fourth largest city in the Tampa Bay area. But what makes Largo, and Florida for that matter, so enviable is not only the weather but the endless stream of sports and other activities. Largo alone boasts 640 acres of park land, has 4.5 thousand businesses, and population size of only 84,000. Therefore, you get all the benefits of living in the big city while enjoying the feel of being in a small town. From Largo, you are a short drive to unlimited white sandy beaches and all the world-famous entertainment you could ever want. And there are plenty of beautiful Largo apartments anyone would be proud to call home.

What is the history of Largo?

The Spanish settled in Florida in the 16th century. However, during the 18th century, the Tocobaga people were all but destroyed due to years of exposure to a myriad of European diseases. Spain transferred the sovereignty of Florida to the United Kingdom in 1763. Then, in 1783 Florida went back to being a Spanish territory until it was transferred and became part of the United States in 1821. The town of Largo was incorporated in 1905. It began as a rural farming community with an economy based on agriculture (citrus groves, hog farms, and cattle ranches). Largo has had a turbulent past, but after World War II, Largo experienced rapid growth and is now largely residential while catering mostly to the services, tourism, and high-tech industries.

The weather in Largo is amazing. Yes, itÆs humid, but almost all apartments in Largo, FL have a pool. The hot season here lasts about 4.5 months beginning in May and lasting until mid-October with a daily high temperature averaging above 86░F. The cool season (it never really gets all that cold in Largo) lasts around three months beginning in December and lasting until March 1st or so with a daily high temperature that is below 73░F. The coldest part of the year is in January with temperatures between 55░F and 69░F, although, it does briefly get down into the thirties at times. The rainy season in Largo is about 3.5 months lasting from June until the end of September with a higher than 42% chance of rain on any given day.

The only public transportation option in Largo is the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus lines. Largo has a bike score of 53 and has some bike infrastructure. The most walkable neighborhoods are Old Northwest, Woodside Village, and Kakusha. The closest airport is the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport which is about 18-22 minutes away.

What is the Largo commute like?

The main highways through Largo are Highway 19 and Alternate 19 both run north and south straight through the city. There are some east and west thoroughfares which are 686 and 688 (Ulmerton Road). Then there are some smaller thoroughfares Belcher Road, Starkey Road, and Ridge Road that run east and west through the city. The average commute from apartments in Largo, FL is about 24 minutes which is shorter than the national average. Highway 19 isnÆt too bad when it comes to traffic unless thereÆs an accident. However, Alternate 19 gets pretty backed up as do the other smaller commuter roads but nothing too hairy.

The local TV stations for Largo are News Channel 8, WTSP 10, Fox 13, ABC Action News 28, and CW 44, so again, there is something for everyone. The Largo Leader is the weekly newspaper in Largo. It covers local news, sports, business, and community events. The main daily newspaper is the Tampa Bay Times which covers the entire Tampa Bay area.

Largo is right off the Gulf of Mexico and has miles of sandy white beaches with endless fun beachy things to do. There are lots of beachside restaurants, bars, and nightlife too. And if you want a change of scenery, you can get to the east coast of Florida in about three hours. Another great reason for choosing to get an apartment in Largo is because you are only two hours from Orlando and all the major attractions there. Additionally, this area is home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Orlando Magic, Tampa Bay Lightning, Tampa Bay Rays, a whole host of college teams, and more. Living in Largo is like being on a continual vacation. You will never run out of things to do.

What Largo landmarks should I see?

A most famous Largo historical site is Heritage Village which is an open-air historical village and museum. This unique village has log cabins and other historical features that date back to the 1850s. There are plenty of other landmarks to tour as well. You might like the Belleair Causeway with its beautiful views. And just a short drive from Largo there are an almost infinite number of other sites to see.

There are a variety of sites to see around Largo. There are the Florida Botanical Gardens, Largo Central Park, McGough Nature Park, Walsingham Park, and the Downtown St. Petersburg Historic District. Largo has many city-wide events throughout the year at Largo Central Park and its other recreation facilities including the Library and Performing Arts Center. Those events include Train Weekend, Movies in the Park, Memorial Days, 4th of July, and Holiday Stroll. There is also the Annual 70s Fest, Pinellas Pepper Fest, Clearwater Spring Fest Car Show, Treasure Island Friday Morning Market, St. Pete Beach Corey Area Craft Festival, Art and Seafood on the Waterfront, Sunscreen Film Festival, and many more.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Florida is one big vacation spot and that includes Largo. You have SeaWorld, the Disney World Resort, and all the surrounding parks. There are also plenty of other attractions even closer which include Busch Gardens amusement park and ZooTampa at Lowry Park. You might also like the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, PGA TourÆs Valspar Championship played at Innisbrook in Palm Harbor, and JohnÆs Pass Village and Boardwalk in Madeira Beach. The best thing about living in Largo and vacationing nearby is that you donÆt have to pay for airfare like other people who travel from around the world just to vacation here. You also wonÆt have to pay for a hotel if you donÆt want to because many of the vacation spots are close enough to Largo apartments that you can just take day trips.
