What is the history of Largo?
The Spanish settled in Florida in the 16th century. However, during the 18th century, the Tocobaga people were all but destroyed due to years of exposure to a myriad of European diseases. Spain transferred the sovereignty of Florida to the United Kingdom in 1763. Then, in 1783 Florida went back to being a Spanish territory until it was transferred and became part of the United States in 1821. The town of Largo was incorporated in 1905. It began as a rural farming community with an economy based on agriculture (citrus groves, hog farms, and cattle ranches). Largo has had a turbulent past, but after World War II, Largo experienced rapid growth and is now largely residential while catering mostly to the services, tourism, and high-tech industries.
