What is the history of Melbourne?

With a population of 80,127 according to the 2015 census, Melbourne is known as the Harbor City. Originally occupied by the Paleo-Indians, it was later founded in 1867 by former slaves. The first European settlers arrived in 1877 and by 1885, the town had grown to a population of 70. Melbourne was first called Crane Creek, but it was changed after the death of the first postmaster name Mr. C. John Hector. He had spent quite a bit of time in Melbourne, Australia, so the town was named in his honor.

How is the weather in Melbourne?

Because it is close to the Gulf and Atlantic Ocean, Melbourne has a subtropical climate, which means it is hot and humid. On rare occasions, several days of frost can occur. The temperature for spring usually average between the high of 85 °F and the low of 56 °F. Summer temperatures range from high of 90 °F and low of 72 °F. Entering into autumn the temperature is between 87 °F and 60 °F. The winter months are usually between 73 °F and 50 °F.

How do I get around town?

There are various ways to get around the city of Melbourne to enjoy what it has to offer. With its 300 miles of highways, you could use a car to see some of the sights and sounds. However, thanks to the county’s Municipal Bus system called Space Coast Area Transit, individuals have 15 different bus routes to take them around the area as well as neighboring towns. The disabled and disadvantage ride for a low price. There are also bike racks outside the bus available for your convenience. Van Pool is part of the Park and Ride program that provide people who have a long commute to and from work a way to share expenses towards gas. After parking your vehicle, in a designated spot, you will board a van with 7-15 other working professionals who have paid a fixed monthly fee for the same service. Melbourne also has a Greyhound Bus Lines and the Melbourne International Airport, which has daily non-stop flights to Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC.

The Melbourne Causeway and the Eau Gallie Causeway are spectacular bridges, comprised of 4-traffic lanes, which extend over the lagoon to connect the land mass. To get the older part of the city you would Babcock Street or Brevard Drive. If you want to enjoy some time on the beachfront, you could drive along Harbor City Boulevard to State Road 404, which will take you to one of the bridges and then onward to access the area. Strawberry and New Haven Avenue will take you to downtown where you can discover a variety of entertainment, commerce and eateries."

Since 1977, Melbourne has celebrated Oktoberfest, recently held in the lovely Wickham Park or on the campus of Brevard Community College. The day is filled with a numerous collection of authentic German beers and 25 different amusement park rides. The Melbourne Arts Festival is another huge occasion, attracting nearly 40- 60,000 people each year. In 2017, the festival will commerce with a THE 5K FLAMINGO RUN, the proceeds will fund the support of artists and the continue education towards their work. You will probably need to visit again because there is so much to see. Thirty minutes away, is the little resort village of Cocoa Beach. This place is charming and would be a great place to meet friends or family for lunch and a walk. Quaint and cozy boutiques, markets, cafes, restaurants and bars line the roomy sidewalks. Benches are plenteous, so you can sit and relax with a drink. In addition, if you want to take man’s best friend along, there is a dog-friendly area available as well."
