For Portland apartment residents with an interest in the past a trip to the Pittcock Mansion is just what the Doctor ordered. Once the home of the pioneer and Oregonian newspaper owner Henry Pittcock in 1914, it remained in the family until 1958 when a grandson sold it. After years of neglect and falling into disrepair Portland's own citizens raised the funds to restore it to its natural beauty and it became a local historic landmark. It's a fully furnished period home from the turn of the century. Portland apartment dwellers taking any of the tours are able to get a real taste of how life was in the turn of the century. Its elegant interior design and ornate architecture combined with original family artifacts give you a distinct feeling of the Pittcock family and the circumstances in which they lived when they gave their great contributions to the Portland area history. Take guided tours, classroom tours, bus tours and even self guide yourself through the gorgeous hallways of this historical mansion. There is also a charming care takers cottage in period condition as well as a museum store to peruse for souvenirs.
