Sausalito Overview

Sausolito, California is one of the most beautiful, comfortable, and convenient cities in the state. Located in storied Marin County, just a few miles north of San Francisco and close to the Pacific Ocean, it offers a lifestyle that will accommodate young professionals as well as families and retirees in Sausalito apartments. There’s truly something for everyone in Sausalito.

What is the history of Sausalito?

Sausalito had its beginnings with the arrival of Spanish explorers in 1775. With a good harbor and easy access to the ocean it became a fishing and transport hub. It profited greatly from the California Gold Rush of 1849, and then during World War II became an important shipbuilding center. After the war it became known as a trendy enclave for the wealthy and the artistic, and also as a popular tourist destination.

How is the weather in Sausalito?

The city epitomizes the beautiful climate that California is famous for, with mild weather and comfortable temperatures year-round. One of the benefits that residents cite most often are the warm and invigorating onshore sea breezes that blow in from the Pacific.

How do I get around town?

Getting around in Sausalito is easy with lots of transportation options. Many people have a personal vehicle for in-town mobility and for driving to work in nearby San Francisco. But the great weather, tourism, and an environmentally-conscious population means there are plenty of walking and biking trails and public transportation too.

What is the Sausalito commute like?

Sausalito is located right on the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, so commuters in cars, bicyclists, and pedestrians alike use it to get across to the big city where many of them work. There is also a regular ferry service across the bay. Highway 101 is a short drive away. Traffic in San Fran can be heavy, and with lots of tourists coming into Sausalito some areas can be crowded at times.

What are the local media outlets?

The longtime local newspaper in Sausalito is called the MarinScope, the go-to source for community happenings in and around the city. The town is also served by a radio station called Radio Sausalito at 1610 on the AM dial. Of course with its close proximity to San Francisco residents have easy access to all the great newspapers, radio, and TV sources across the bridge.

Why live in Sausalito, CA?

There are many good reasons people move to Sausalito. One is the comparatively low cost of rent and real estate in the town, considerably less than in the city across the bay. There’s also a low rate of crime, quaint shops and restaurants, and lots of art galleries and other cultural resources. It’s kid and family-friendly, and in general retains a small-town atmosphere. Of course those that love the sea and boats will be in heaven.

What Sausalito landmarks should I see?

The Golden Gate Bridge stands out as the most prominent landmark associated with Sausalito, and the whole area is steeped in history, with the Old City Hall and the Dubrow House being popular attractions. There is a well-known and large houseboat community close to town, and lots of public parks, playgrounds, and public beaches and piers.

What is there to do around Sausalito?

Things to do in Sausalito include a visit to the H. Dana Bowers Memorial Vista Point with its stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Sausalito Boardwalk with its rocky waterfront, charming eateries and shops, and the Marine Mammal Center and the Bay Area Marine Center offer a close up look at some of the natural flora and fauna that inhabit the area, including sea lions, dolphins, and whales. Wineries are plentiful in the region also.

Any annual festivals or Sausalito events to know?

With its historical focus on the arts, the Sausalito Art Festival has become a very popular annual event. Visitors can see local and national artists and their works. Jazz and Blues by the Bay is another summertime happening for music lovers, and the Sausalito Halloween Parade is scary fun for all ages, but especially for the kids.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

For those wanting to get away from the city and into the lovely countryside, several destinations beckon, including Muir Woods National Monument, with its breathtaking natural beauty and giant redwood trees, the Point Reyes National Seashore with its stunning ocean vistas and picturesque lighthouse, and the waterfalls and whale watching at Alamere Falls. Plenty of camping grounds and other accommodations are readily available.

Where is the best place to move in Sausalito?

There are plenty of housing options and apartments in Sausalito, California, and where you stake your claim is just a matter of your personal preferences and needs. If you enjoy the water then there are plenty of convenient places by the bay. Some like to live closer to the bridge for a quick hop into the city. Up in the hills you’ll find older and wealthier residents and great views of the region. If you like to people watch and browse the shops and cafes, then you might be happier in a little place closer to the downtown area. Wherever you choose to live in Sausalito, CA, you’ll find a small-town atmosphere and a great way of life.
