Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area was inhabited by Native Americans. They have lived in the area for thousands of years, and the first European settlers arrived in the area during the 18th century. During the Revolutionary War, the Cherokee aligned themselves with the British. They fought against the colonists living in the area, but eventually, the American colonists won their freedom from the British. Sevier County itself was created in 1794, and the area was predominantly a farming town. During the Civil War, Sevierville suffered continuous loading and harassment, as it was located just south of Knoxville. After the Civil War, the town recovered quickly, and a lot of new businesses were built at the end of the 19th century. Eventually, the town grew into its current form. Of note, Dolly Parton was born near Sevierville in 1946.
