The city gets its name from the “Uva” grape which the Spanish found growing along local river banks. The area became an active landing for steamboats around 1852 with one hotel, a grocery store, post office, and about 20 private residences. At just 60 feet of elevation, about 60 miles from the west coast, and fed by a robust river system, Yuba City offers a moderate climate with highs averaging around 95 and lows at a comfortable median of 54 degrees Fahrenheit. The late winter months can be quite rainy, but that’s about the worst you can expect during most years.
How do I get around town?
By and large, the people of Yuba City are fairly independent and most people will need an automobile to get by and the city and residential areas are built around two major highways. However, with the mostly amenable weather, cycling is a good option.
What is the Yuba City commute like?
Public transportation is provided by the Yuba Sutter Transit company. Routes are not nearly as extensive as they are in more heavily populated areas but the bus system is sufficient to reach most major points of interest and commerce. There are just two taxi companies in Yuba City, the All Star Cab company, and Budget Cab. These are not full service 27/7 taxi companies, and should not be relied on for spur of the moment or emergency transport.
What are the local media outlets?
The two major radio stations in Yuba City are Radio Mexicana 99.7 and Kuba AM-1600. Radio Mexicana primarily caters to a Spanish speaking population and Kuba covers sports, news, and plays a lot of nostalgic 70s and 80s music.
