Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area around Revere, MA was inhabited by Native American tribes. These Native Americans belonged to the Pawtucket tribe and were called Rumney Marsh Indians by the colonists who lived in the area. In 1616, a smallpox epidemic swept through the area, killing thousands. Despite this, the area recovered and the colonists had their fill of turbulent times, particularly during King Phillip’s War. Eventually, the region calmed down and Revere’s settlements steadily grew until the American Revolution broke out. This location played host to one of the area’s first major naval battles. In 1846, the town of North Chelsea was established and the town changed its name to Revere in 1871. In 1914, the town grew into a city, giving rise to the Revere people know and love today.
