Explore Washington
Outdoor and indoor athletes alike will love this excellent park located south of Independence Avenue and the tidal basin, East Potomac Park - Hains Point. It is a 300+ acre peninsula just between the Washington Channel and the Potomac River on the south side of the Tidal Basin. Here you can find a place to bike, run, fish and picnic. Excellent views of the city, the water and DC's famous cherry trees are found here as well. If you're looking for an indoor sport, try the wonderful indoor tennis center with 24 courts, a practice wall, lockers, showers and a pro shop. This is a public facility, so there is no membership required, and walk-ins and reservations are accepted. The tennis facility is well-worth visiting, as one of the largest in the DC area, and voted the tennis facility of the year in 2006. The southern end of the park is known as Hains Point with the closest Metro station as the Smithsonian or you can access the park on foot by following the trails from the Jefferson Memorial. 320 free parking spaces (very unusual in DC) make it easy to get there by car, but beware, many apartment-ites getting out on weekend afternoons on nice days will take most of the parking spots. In addition, at East Potomac Park there is a golf course, a mini-golf course, a playground, an outdoor pool, tennis courts, picnic facilities, and a recreation center. The pool is open June - August during the afternoon from 1-8pm during the week and until 6 pm on the weekends, but closed Wednesdays. Hains Point is a lovely park with bathrooms, shady picnic areas and plenty of space to throw a Frisbee, a game of football or to just to run around.
