Westminster Overview

Westminster has that big city feel - but without being too big. Yes, with a population of more than 110,000, Westminster has anything and everything a resident needs to live comfortably and stay entertained, but considering its location as a northwest suburb of Denver, professional sports and even more big city entertainment are just a short drive away. So too are the Rocky Mountains, which you can see in the distance. It's all a part of what makes Westminster should a great area to live, as the area mixes nightlife with nature. Read on for more about what makes the region so special and why renting one of the many available Westminster apartments can make for such a great choice.

What is the history of Westminster?

Westminster's roots date back to 1858 when gold was discovered in the area. The first permanent settlement came in 1870, and others soon followed. Though this area of Colorado wasn't ideal for farming, Westminster's early economy was largely contingent on growing fruit, particularly apples and cherries. Once rural, the area's population boomed following World War II when returning soldiers looked for a place to permanently call home and took to the Westminster area's scenery and year-round climate.

How is the weather in Westminster?

The weather is one of the reasons why Westminster's population boomed in the post-World War II era. With summer temperatures reaching the high-80s and low-90s, cold winters, and pleasant fall and spring seasons, the four seasons in a picturesque area is a major draw for residents. While Westminster only gets about 17 inches of rain per year - down from the national average of 38 inches - it gets an above-average 64 inches of annual snow, making it a paradise for skiing, snowboarding and other snow recreation activities.

How do I get around town?

It's east to get around town, which makes renting a Westminster apartment an ideal option. There's the Denver Regional Transportation District, or RTD, which offers public bus transportation in the area via The Filtration Flyer rapid transit service. The Filtration Flyer offers transportation to and from Denver and Boulder, and the bus travels in express lanes for prompt service that you wouldn't otherwise get from a standard bus. For longer journeys, Westminster is served by two airports: Denver International Airport and the smaller Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport.

What is the Westminster commute like?

Aside from public transportation or commercial aviation, it's easy to get around Westminster with your own vehicle as well thanks to the numerous highways that intersect it. There's 1-25, US 36 and US 287, and there are also other busy throughways, including SH 95, SH 121 and SH 128.

What are the local media outlets?

Since Westminster is located so close to Denver, both cities tend to share the same media - as it falls into the Denver coverage area. These outlets include the main daily newspaper covering the region, The Denver Post, news-talk radio stations KOA and KNUS, and local CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox affiliates. Other notable media outlets include the Denver Business Journal and KHOW.

Why live in Westminster, CO?

Westminster is a great place to live for several reasons. For starters, the scenery is beautiful, as it's located near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, offering picturesque views. Westminster also allows its residents opportunity to experience all four seasons and is a haven for outdoor lovers, especially during the winter months. It's also a great place for young professionals and young families, with the median age at just 33 years. A smaller city that's still located within striking distance of Denver, Westminster is an attractive destination with lots to do in the region.

What Westminster landmarks should I see?

In addition to the nearby Rock Mountains, there are a few notable landmarks that define the area. One is Westminster University, which is also commonly referred to as Westminster Castle. Built with sandstone from the Colorado Red Rocks region, the Castle is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and previously served as a school until enrollment dissipated in 1917 when its student base largely went to serve in World War I. It still stands loud and proud today. The other notable landmark is the 14-story Bell Tower at the top of Westminster City Hall, which is a tribute to the Big Ben clock tower in its European namesake, Westminster, England.

What is there to do around Westminster?

There's plenty to do in the Westminster area, from outdoor activities (rafting, fly fishing, rock climbing, skiing and snowboarding, trails, etc.) to dining at one of the city's restaurant establishments. The Orchard Town Center is the shopping Mecca in the area, featuring more than 90 retailers, and downtown Westminster offers more than 100 acres of parks and public space. Nightlife is also a draw in the area, with many bars and clubs to frequent.

Any annual festivals or Westminster events to know?

Westminster plays host to a number of community festivals throughout the year. These include a community-wide Cleanup every April, an Armed Forces Day ceremony, an annual Independence Day celebration, a Halloween Harvest Festival and a holiday season lighting ceremony. This is all in addition to various craft beer and food festivals, an annual zombie golf tournament and more.

Colorado is an outdoor lover's paradise, with plenty of skiing and snowboarding opportunities in the winter, and hiking, climbing, biking and fishing in the summer. That said, a great vacation is just a short drive away when you venture toward the Rocky Mountains. Clear Creek offers everything from rafting to hiking in its canyons, Flaitrons Vista offers mountain trails with scenic views and the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge is a great way to get closer to nature.
