York, PA is known as the White Rose City. It has a population of 43,718. It’s the11th largest in Pennsylvania. The city has been known as an architectural museum because the downtown area features a number of historic, well-preserved structures. The city is home to four different national historic districts. Two of these are the Fairmount Historic District, and Springdale Historic District.

York was known as Yorktown in the mid 18th century and was founded in 1741 by settlers from Philadelphia. During the Revolutionary War, the city served as a temporary capital of the Continental Congress. The Articles of Confederation were drafted in the city. During the Civil War, the city became the largest northern town to be occupied by the Confederate Army. York remained a regional center for local agriculture but also became an important industrial center for industries such as railroad manufacturing and steam engines.

Just like most of the state, the city has a humid continental climate, which means warm to hot humid summers, along with moderately cold winters. There are four distinct seasons. The precipitation is fairly even throughout the year and it rains an overage 126 days per year. In late winter, there can be some snowfall that makes the roads dangerous.

Since the area has a history of auto manufacturing it’s not surprising that the locals appreciate the combustion engine. This is seen by the traffic along Interstate 83 and Route 30 during rush hour. The regional transit system operates to surrounding areas that include Hanover and Gettysburg. Additional travel is accommodated by Greyhound, which does have a bus depot in the city. The closest airport is Harrisburg International Airport, which is located about 30 miles to the north.

The average commute time is 27.1 minutes, which is a little more than the national average as well. Other means of transportation include walking and public transportation.

York supports two daily newspapers, despite its small size. The York Dispatch is published Monday through Friday and the York Daily Record/Sunday News is published seven days a week. York is part of the Susquehanna Valley media market. One Fox affiliate is actually based in the city. It’s also not uncommon for York residents to get some stations from Baltimore due the proximity.

Although the city isn’t as big as some nearby ones, the metro area does have a number of ways for residents to be out and about. There is the popular Central Market farmers market, along with theaters for live performances and classic films. There is a minor league baseball stadium for sports fans. The city is known for its diversified appetites so a variety of foods can be found at the local eateries. Outside the city, there is Gettysburg National Military Park, a major draw for history buffs.

Yorkfest is the annual summer fine arts festival with 100 fine artists from around the country and plenty of family-friendly entertainment. Light Up York takes place in December with free family-friendly activities and a tree lighting ceremony. The Olde York Street Fair is a Mother’s Day tradition in the downtown area with 100 vendors offering handmade arts and crafts, along with food vendors.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
York is a place that is close to just about anywhere. Washington, DC and Philadelphia are less than two hours away by car and Baltimore, MD is not far away. You can also get to the capital city of Harrisburg, PA. Much of the landscape surrounding York is rural so if you want to escape to the countryside, this is also possible. With the airport not being far away, you can be on a flight in no time.
