Clearwater Overview

Clean water, wide shores, progressive politics, good weather, access to large metropolitan areas, and the Magic Kingdom - about an hour away. What more could you ask for in a beachside town? Clearwater, Fl is an excellent place to move and with so many options in apartments in Clearwater, finding the perfect place is a snap!

What is the history of Clearwater?

"Clearwater itself became a city in 1915, but the area was settled long before that. Originally a Native American area known as Pocotopaug, which literally means ""clear water,"" the region saw its first European contact in 1528. Jesuit settlers followed but were beaten back by Native Americans. It wasn't until the 1800s when non-Native American settlers came back. Since then, Clearwater has built a reputation as a relaxing resort city."

How is the weather in Clearwater?

The temperature range in Clearwater isn't very large. Summers have highs in the 80s and 90s, winters have lows in the 50s. Spring and fall are both fairly moderate. There's no snow, of course, but the area receives a whopping 53 inches of rain each year. Humidity levels are tempered by coastal breezes, making the region surprisingly comfortable. Residents of apartments in Clearwater should be aware that as part of Florida, the city can be subject to tropical storms and hurricanes.

How do I get around town?

Clearwater itself is relatively small, but much of it is built on barrier islands and a peninsula. You can certainly walk locally, but if you want to reach Tampa or other cities in the metro region, a car is advisable. This will also help with evacuation if a hurricane is approaching. There is public transit in the form of the Jolley Trolley, a two-route service that uses old-time trolley cars (motorized, not light rail) to travel between Clearwater, Dunedin, and a few other stops. For more extensive travel, try the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority, which has several bus routes traveling around the peninsula and into Tampa. The region has two international airports, Tampa and St. Petersburg/Clearwater.

What is the Clearwater commute like?

Most commuting is done by car and takes less than 35 minutes. Weather conditions can affect the timing. Interstates 75, 275, and 4 serve the Tampa Bay Area, but only 275 continues into Clearwater itself. Expect tourist traffic on routes in and out of the city.

What are the local media outlets?

Clearwater receives all of Tampa and St. Petersburg's media, so residents of apartments in Clearwater, FL, can expect to have their choice of channels. The Tampa Bay Times, the St. Petersburg Tribune, and the Clearwater Sun are all available for those who want a newspaper.

Why live in Clearwater, FL?

Clearwater is a socially responsible city that is easy to navigate and that offers access to larger metro areas while still maintaining a laid-back atmosphere. You can always find something to do in the area.

What Clearwater landmarks should I see?

There's no disputing that one of the biggest landmarks is the beach! Clearwater's beaches are clean expanses of white sand and crystal blue water. You can also take a walking tour to some of Clearwater's historical landmarks, such as Fort Harrison, a former hospital fort built on the original site where the modern city of Clearwater started.

What is there to do around Clearwater?

Try heading to Bright House Field in baseball's training season to watch the Philadelphia Phillies practice. Or catch a film at the Capitol Theatre, which has excellent acoustics and looks like one of the art deco Hollywood theaters of yesteryear. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium is another spot to stop at and learn about everything from reefs to otters to dolphins.

Any annual festivals or Clearwater events to know?

Winter is fairly calm in the area festival-wise, many small holiday boat light parades and a Greek festival in nearby Tarpon Springs in January liven things up. In spring, head to St. Petersburg and Tampa for the Firestone Grand Prix and the Tampa Bay Blues Festival, in summer, St. Pete's Pride Fest and GeckoFest are fun events to attend. In Fall, Clearwater's own festival schedule comes to the fore with the Clearwater Superboat National Championship and the Clearwater Jazz Holiday Festival.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

In addition to the beach, a drive of a little over an hour northeast of the area will get you to Epcot and the Magic Kingdom. Drive across Florida to the east to see places like Cape Canaveral, drive southeast to see Lake Okeechobee and Miami.

Where is the best place to move in Clearwater?

Clearwater's nicer neighborhoods tend to be near the bay and beaches. Safety Harbor has an excellent reputation, but much of the city offers a fine selection of great Clearwater apartments to live in.
