Denver has no shortage of movie theaters, so when apartment-ites want to spend their night out enjoying a good flick, they have their fair share of viewing options. No movie theater in town has quite the history of the esquire theater, however, and it's one of the best, and only, place in town to catch the most unique and intriguing foreign and independent movies. For movie snobs, there's no better theater in Denver for your buck, and for those looking to take in a little Denver history, you'll be in hog heaven as well. The Esquire is a historical icon, first opening in the late 1920s, at a time when it had only one screen, and mostly screened arthouse films. From those days, it has grown by leaps and bounds, and it now it has two large auditorium, one with a larger screen, perfect for more popular features, and a smaller, more intimate space, more ideal for smaller scale screenings and special events. It may not have the dozens of screenings and hundreds of showings that many megaplexes can promise, but what it likes for in quantity it more than makes up for in quality, with one of the best environments to enjoy a true piece of cinema in the city. The theater mainly plays independent and foreign films, mostly the most popular of them, although it's not uncommon to see a sleeper hit gracing its screens. In addition to its regular showings, it also features a number of Midnight Madness showings, where they screen special movies depending on the season. These features range from classic horror films, eighties fantasies hits, to touring movies that you can't see anywhere else. Movie theaters are not an uncommon sight in Denver, but few places let you take in a movie while also taking in some of Denver's rich history. Denver's Esquire Theater does just that, and apartment-ites will have a blast enjoying the fantastic independent films and special screenings, while feeling like a piece of the city's legacy at the same time.
