What is the history of Oklahoma City?

Oklahoma City, settled in 1889, was originally Indian territory and became the state capital in 1907. The city began to boom when oil was discovered in the 1920s. There were so many oil wells in the city, even the capital lawn couldn’t escape them! In the 1960s the city declined as people migrated to the suburbs. The 1990s saw a revitalization of population, jobs and entertainment and the city is now a vibrant place to live.

How do I get around town?

Getting around the city is a breeze no matter what mode of transportation you prefer. A decade ago it was labeled one of the “fattest cities in America”. To get in and out of the city, there's Will Rogers World Airport, an Amtrack train station, and Greyhound Bus Service.

Even though these two highways run through OKC, the average commute for residents is 20.7 minutes compared to the national average of 25.8 minutes. Other major roadways include I-44 and the historic Route 66. Highways are generally congested only during rush hour and city streets are designed on a grid that’s easy to maneuver.
