What is the history of Oklahoma City?
Oklahoma City, settled in 1889, was originally Indian territory and became the state capital in 1907. The city began to boom when oil was discovered in the 1920s. There were so many oil wells in the city, even the capital lawn couldn’t escape them! In the 1960s the city declined as people migrated to the suburbs. The 1990s saw a revitalization of population, jobs and entertainment and the city is now a vibrant place to live.
How is the weather in Oklahoma City?
Oklahoma City is truly a four season city. Winters are generally cold with some snow. However, weather can also rise above 70 degrees occasionally during the winter. Spring is a season of moderate temperatures and frequent rain. Summer has an average temperature of 83 degrees, however, it frequently reaches the 90s, especially in August. Autumn in the city is moderately warm but cools quickly as winter approaches.
How do I get around town?
Getting around the city is a breeze no matter what mode of transportation you prefer. A decade ago it was labeled one of the “fattest cities in America”. This prompted a movement to promote walking and now it is friendly to both cars and pedestrians. EMBARK, the city's public transportation system, offers extensive options including buses, LINK (curb to curb service), Ferry Service over the Oklahoma River, Spokies (OKC’s bike share program) and transportation for the disabled and elderly. To get in and out of the city, there's Will Rogers World Airport, an Amtrack train station, and Greyhound Bus Service.
What is the Oklahoma City commute like?
An interesting fact about Oklahoma City is that it is at the intersection of two of the longest interstates in the country, I-40, and I-35. Even though these two highways run through OKC, the average commute for residents is 20.7 minutes compared to the national average of 25.8 minutes. Other major roadways include I-44 and the historic Route 66. Highways are generally congested only during rush hour and city streets are designed on a grid that’s easy to maneuver.

It’s the hotspot for night clubs and restaurants. The city also has numerous art districts and ethnic districts to explore.
